Being a mother is one of the most rewarding yet challenging roles you can undertake. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or uncertain about how to be a better mother and I do not have an easy way to do that or a quick solution. But, one of the most effective ways to learn anything, whether its baking or how to be a better mother is by setting meaningful goals and creating actionable tasks to achieve them. In this article, we will explore why goal setting matters, how tasks can support you in reaching your goals, and some practical examples of goals and tasks to help you in your journey of learning how to be a better mother.

The Importance of Setting Goals as a Mother

Setting goals gives direction and purpose to your efforts. As a mother, it can sometimes feel like you’re juggling a million priorities, and you are. Setting goals is not something else on your to-do list – it will actually help you turn down the outside noise and focus on what truly matters to you and your family.

Why Goals Matter

  • They provide clarity on what you want to achieve.
  • They help you measure progress, so you feel a sense of accomplishment more regularly.
  • They give you a sense of control, even when life feels chaotic.

The good news? Setting goals doesn’t have to be overwhelming. The key is to start small and be realistic about what you can achieve.

How to Be a Better Mother Through Goals and Tasks

Before diving into examples, it’s important to understand the difference between a goal and a task.

Goal: A goal is the desired outcome you’re working toward. It’s the big picture and it is not entirely in your control. For example, “Have a strong connection with my child”

Task: A task is a specific action you can take to move closer to your goal. Tasks are 100% in your control and should be actionable. For example, “Turn off my phone during dinner.”

Tasks break your goals into manageable steps, making them feel achievable instead of overwhelming. Tasks might not take you to your goal because there are external factors at play, but by focusing on tasks you can make consistent progress without feeling stuck or discouraged.

Examples of Goals and Supporting Tasks

Here are some examples of common goals for mothers, along with practical tasks to help you reach them. These should of course be adapted to your personal needs, family dynamics and lifestyle.

Cultivate Stronger Connections with Your Children

  • Schedule 15 minutes of uninterrupted one-on-one time with a child every day (rotating schedule for multiple children).
  • Leave your phone in another room, silenced, during meals and playtime.
  • Create a family ritual, like a weekly movie night or storytime in parents’ bed on school nights.

Foster a Peaceful Home Environment

  • Declutter one area of the house each week.
  • Establish a meal planning schedule for your family.
  • Pick the children up from school 15 minutes earlier twice a week.
  • Practice mindfulness or deep-breathing exercises daily for 10 minutes to manage stress.

Strengthen Communication with Your Child

  • Practice active listening by repeating back what your child says before responding.
  • Ask open-ended questions during conversations.
  • Write a short note or message of encouragement for your child once a week.

Take Care of Yourself to Be a Better Mom

  • Set aside 30 minutes a day for self-care, whether it’s exercising, reading, or meditating.
  • Plan one “me day” every quarter to recharge.
  • Every day, eat one healthy meal and drink 2L of water.

Encourage Your Child’s Independence

  • Always have a new skill in progress with each child, like tying their shoes or packing their lunch.
  • Allow your child to make age-appropriate decisions, such as picking their outfit or choosing a weekend activity.
  • Praise effort over outcomes to build confidence.

How to Stay on Track with Your Goals

Here are a few tips to help you stay consistent and motivated as you work on learning how to be a better mother:

  1. Write It Down: Document your goals and tasks. Set dates for when you want to achieve your goals. Maybe you have a monthly focus and you rotate through 4 different goals throughout the year, focusing on one goal monthly then every 3 months.
  2. Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge your efforts and progress. Even small achievements deserve recognition. Plan a reward for yourself for when you achieve your goal. A new workout outfit, getting your nails done, a drink with an old friend – whatever will give you a little reward for all of your effort.
  3. Be Flexible: Life as a mom is unpredictable. It’s okay to adjust your goals and tasks as needed. You never know until you try so get to it and know that it’s okay if it changes.
  4. Ask for Support: Don’t hesitate to lean on your partner, friends, or family for encouragement and accountability. Can you make some goals with your partner? Or with a friend? If you have the same goals or tasks then you can check in with one another to provide encouragement.
